Enhance your tie’s appeal...
Wearing a
tie is now a fashion statement. The design of the tie, the cut,
and the way it is tied says a lot about the tastes of the wearer.
Most of the ties available in the market are made either of silk or
polyester. While silk ties tend to look classy due to the
characteristic sheen, polyester ties are somewhat cheaper, though no
less aesthetic. Satin ties make one of the smartest alternatives to
silk ties, retaining the glossiness at a more economical price. Silk
and satin ties should also be worn under a glossy suit having shiny
lapels, adding to the overall lustrous look. Another event that
calls for a silk tie is a job interview. Here, subtleness is
paramount as the wearer’s career is at stake. The tie should look
neat, enhancing the presentability of the user.
Appearance-wise,
Belisi ties can be classified into two main categories; plain or
solid ties and patterned ties. Plain and solid ties have one uniform
color running right across the length of the tie. Popular colors of
plain ties include blue, red, green and purple. The monotony of
plain ties can be alleviated to a certain extent with the
incorporation of H/Rib and D/Rib textures that have horizontal or
diagonal weaves. Patterned or designed ties sport varied colors and
inventive patterns. The patterns rendered to the tie as well as the
color combinations are restricted to the imagination of the user.
Another popular tie for use especially at the work place is the
striped or dotted tie. Striped ties look smart and exude a look of
professionalism. Plain ties are the most versatile as they can be
used just about anywhere. Additionally, such ties are compatible
with the maximum number of clothes. However, for informal gatherings
and for those ‘young at heart’, brightly designed ‘loud’ ties would
be de rigueur. It is advisable that any self-respecting gentleman
have a mix of all kinds of ties so that he is never left ‘high and
dry’ when setting out for any occasion. Another good idea would be
to keep stock of a couple of black ties for somber occasions such as
funerals.
One of the most important
considerations when
wearing a tie is to match this clothing accessory with the shirt
as well as the suit, if the person happens to be wearing one. Since
the tie is supposed to complement the shirt, the color tones of the
tie should not be so close to the shirt that it seems to ‘disappear’
into the shirt. While a shirt and tie having the same color would be
ideal, a certain amount of contrast would always be preferred. Thus,
a dark blue shirt could be coupled with a light blue tie or vice
versa. On similar lines, a striped tie could be worn on a plain
shirt. If a waist band is being worn under a tail coat, here too the
tie should preferably match the band. Fashion advisors swear by a
tie-pocket square combination, the only requirement being that the
pocket square is required to match the tie to a certain extent.

When wearing a tie, a point
to keep in mind is that the lower tip of the tie should fall a
little lower than the upper edge of the wearer’s belt. Some ties,
called clip-ons, are already pre-folded and have a clip at the back
of the knot that can be used to affix the tie to the shirt collar. A
well-draped and well chosen tie has the power to transform even the
most staid individual into the epitome of panache.
